GULKANA, ALASKA

Awesome King Salmon Fishing

semi-overcast

Jim_1st_kingsalmon_.jpgGot news that the King Salmon are running in the Gulkana River, so we switched gears & headed down Hwy 4 towards Glenn Allen junction. Found a outfitter w/a rustic campground (no water/sewer/electric) on the Gulkana river. After talking w/a few locals, Jimboni raced down to the river & proceeded to catch a 30lb King Salmon. Our fellow campers from Oregon helped us clean & filet it. Then, we took the salmon roe & curred it for future bait.
Since it's stays light most of the night, Jimboni went out again 130am - caught another 20lb King! Yippee! We dry camped here for 3 days

TOK, ALASKA

Yippee - Back in the USA!

sunny

Whitehorse to Tok is almost 400 miles, so we stopped @ a Provincial Campground about 1/2 way. Nice campsite on the river-dry camped. Also stopped @ a burl wood carving place called Scullywood. What a character! He's doin' what he loves - making beautiful bowls out of knots from the trees. The place is full of interesting stuff - "Uneek Today, Anteek Tommorrow" Scully was the hi-lite of our day! Arrived in Tok after a very slow go on washboard, gravel, dusty, potholled, frost heave roads! We rig was filthy dirty as we crossed the border & arrived in Tok. Fortunately, our campground had a RV wash-yippee! Nice campground w/all the amenities - even internet & cell phone coverage!!
We going to drive our jeep up to Dawson City (we heard the road was rough, so thought we'd make better time scooting up in the car!
